The West Handyside Canopy was constructed in 1888, between the Eastern Transit Shed and the Midland Goods Shed.

It provided a covered area for unloading fish and other perishable goods directly from railway wagons onto road vehicles, while continuing to give road access to the goods sheds on either side and to the Goods Yard beyond.
