The Regent's CanalThe Regent's Canal

The Regent's Canal bisects the site. It runs east to Islington and beyond, and west to Regent's Park and beyond.

We will improve towpath safety and quality. This means opening up access to the Canal at key points and delivering enhanced walkways, mooring points and lighting.

One of the most dramatic differences to the access will be the terraced steps and seating from Granary Square on the North side down to the towpath at the water's edge.

We will be opening up the arches along the existing towpath wall to gain access from the water's edge through to the lower levels of Coal Drops Yard.

A new Pavilion built to the eastern edge of Granary Square will allow access from the higher level through the building to the lower level where the pavilion's seating will spill out onto the side of the Canal.

Between Maiden Lane Bridge and the new Pavilion, access to the Canal from the higher level will be via a ramp through 'soft' landscaping.

Other access points include the café and bar at 1-3 Canal Street to the west where people can relax and watch canal life go by.

We will also be crossing the Canal with three new bridges.

One bridge will carry two-way public transport from Goods Way and the Boulevard north through Granary Square and beyond. Another crossing will be a new footbridge from Goods Way to a point just east of the Fish and Coal Offices, whilst a third bridge will carry pedestrians and cycles from the upper level of the Western Coal Drops over to Camley Street Natural Park, Camley Street and beyond into Camden Town.

We will be animating the underside of all the bridges that cross the canal within this stretch of water with art and lighting.
