Give and Gain DayGive and Gain Day

June 2009

Give and Gain Day is a national volunteering initiative organised by Business in the Community, which encourages over 4,000 business employees to volunteer in their local communities for one day a year.

In June 2009, Carillion and King's Cross Central teamed up to build a reading garden for St Michaels C of E Primary School in Camden. The Carillion team designed benches and trellis walls which were made by apprentices training at the King's Cross Construction Skills Centre. A member of the King's Cross Central team designed a mural for the garden featuring characters from the children's favourtie stories. Carillion and King's Cross Central volunteers then worked at the school for a day building the garden and painting the mural. All materials were provided for free by four Carillion suppliers: BOMA, Houston Cox, Speedy, Knight Build.

This has provided the school with an attractive outdoor quiet area that can be used for reading by whole classes or individual children during breaktime.
Outputs

The project resulted in construction of a reading garden in the school grounds.
Feedback / Outcomes
