Artist in ResidenceArtist in Residence

King's Cross Central and the Arts Council England (ACE) have developed an innovative artist in residence programme. This has evolved from ACE's Interact project that placed artists in a business environment.

The role of King's Cross Central in this project is to provide access to the site and development process as well as help artists to produce and exhibit work. In practice this has meant providing access to site, studio space for the length of residency, exhibition space, exhibition materials and additional financial support for the exhibition.

ACE has provided a stipend for the artist and curator as well as ongoing expertise in management of residencies. Both partners have been supported in development of the programme by CreateKX, Camden Arts Centre and London Borough of Camden.

In 2008 Ellie Reid was selected after a competitive process and was provided with studio space on, and access to, the King's Cross Central development site. The placement concluded with an exhibition in the event space at the German Gymnasium.

In the second year of the programme, we decided to appoint a curator alongside an artist in order to enhance interpretation and communication of the artist's work to the wide ranging audience who pass through the site.

After an open competition, Graham Hudson was appointed as artist in residence, working alongside Ben Borthwick of Butchers Curators. Graham is producing a sculpture a day and a series of texts exploring aspects of the site. These will contribute to the exhibition he is planning to put on in the German Gymnasium in 2010. Ben and Graham are also producing six films exploring the role of an artist on site. These will be shown during the exhibition.
