Resident Artist Moves in at King's Cross CentralResident Artist Moves in at King's Cross Central

• Graham Hudson selected to be new ‘Artist in Residence’ for King’s Cross Central, drawing inspiration from Europe’s largest city centre regeneration scheme.

• The placement is a collaboration between the Arts Council England and King’s Cross Central.

• The six month residency forms part of the developing arts and cultural programme on site.

King’s Cross Central and the Arts Council England, have selected London-based Graham Hudson to be the new ‘Artist in Residence’ for the next six months at the 67 acre regeneration scheme.

Hudson is the second Artist in Residence selected for King’s Cross Central, following Ellie Reid earlier in 2009. The judging panel - Teresa Drace-Francis (Arts Council England), Gill Henderson (CreateKX) and Anna Strongman (King's Cross Central) - selected Hudson after an open call for applications.

Hudson was selected because his work has consistently demonstrated a commitment to engaging with public space. His strong interest in the materials and processes of the construction industry make the links between his work and the site especially exciting at this early stage of the development. He will engage with the ongoing construction project through a series of installations, events, interventions and sculptures, sometimes monumental in scale of time and space, at other times ephemeral and slight.

Graham Hudson, Artist in Residence, says:
"My approach treats the entire site as a studio which changes hourly, making this an intriguing brief to consider. The passing of time is rarely so prominent in a site where art is placed. Its all about process, and the challenge is to create work in this context – to compliment, critique, document, and tinker with this process – and my own."

His residency can be followed online here

Hudson (b. 1977) Graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2002 and has recently presented work at the Architectural Association, London, The Baltic, Gateshead, Monitor, Rome and The Camden Arts Centre, London. Forthcoming shows include MK Gallery, Milton Keynes, ZINGERpresents, Amsterdam, CRISP, London and the Saatchi Gallery, London.

Hudson will be collaborating with the local King’s Cross-based curators, Butcher’s, who will work with him on the documentation of the project over the six months, which will include guest writers, interviews, and items of photography and film. In addition to the final exhibition at the German Gymnasium in autumn 2010, they aim to realise a series of events and projects that respond inspired by the site.

Ben Borthwick at Butchers, says:
"The chance to collaborate with Graham over a six month period, and to be part of the larger process of changes that are taking place in King’s Cross, is really exciting. One of the things that link Graham and Butcher’s is a commitment to working in non-traditional spaces and it doesn’t get much more unorthodox than this! It is a unique challenge and an opportunity to re-imagine the residency as a process that unfolds across time through a varied programme of events and interventions, culminating in the exhibition at the German Gymnasium."

King’s Cross Central’s arts programme continues to develop. The programme includes hosting projects such as Catherine Yass’ Highwire, an ArtAngel project at The German Gymnasium, and William Forsythe’s installation Scattered Crowd, presented by Sadler’s Wells in the Midland Goods Shed, as well as direct commissions such as Pathways by D-Fuse.

King’s Cross Central is emerging as an important partner in local arts development and in 2011 will welcome the 6,500 staff and students of Central St Martins as the University of the Arts relocates to its new home in the refurbished Granary building.

Anna Strongman, Development Manager at King’s Cross Central
"We are delighted to welcome Graham to King’s Cross Central. The arts are central to this development and Graham is continuing, and helping to create, the rich tradition of challenging and creative work in the King’s Cross area."

Moira Sinclair, Executive Director, Arts Council England, London says:
"We are delighted that Graham will be the next artist in residence at King's Cross Central. This unique placement, made possible by our partnership with King's Cross Central, creates a platform for the exchange of ideas and perspectives between arts and industry. We look forward to the artist immersing himself in the site and producing innovative new work that reflects and builds on the artistic traditions of King's Cross."
