1 Handyside Street - Sustainability
Central to the design philosophy of King’s Cross is the commitment to create the most sustainable and low-energy city centre development of any significant scale in the UK.
At the heart of this philosophy are on-site energy centres with CHP plant (delivering both hot water and power) and a site wide hot water distribution network.
To demonstrate the approach to sustainable building design, 1 Handyside Street has been developed as an exemplar of energy efficient urban office design and will take full advantage of the site wide CHP benefits.
With a BREEAM rating of “Excellent”, the building will achieve carbon emissions 41% lower than permitted by Part L of the building regulations, saving 762 tonnes of carbon per annum relative to this regulatory benchmark.
The buildings environmental performance approaches that of a naturally ventilated building and we are confident that it will be the most energy efficient large office building in central London. Additionally, great efforts have been made to provide a significant new ecological habitat at roof level. Green and brown roofs cover almost 40% of the roof area, nearly half an acre. We are again confident that this will be the largest green/brown roof provision on a single office building in central London.
