National Skills Academy for ConstructionNational Skills Academy for Construction

October 2009 - October 2012

National Skills Academy for Construction is an initiative led by Construction Skills to ensure the construction sector has a skilled labour force. Each contractor has signed up to help recruit high calibre candidates to the sector and to upskill the existing work force.

Targets relating to a set of priorities provide a framework for delivery. These are set out in the project Employment and Skills Plan. The Project Skills Co-ordinator, Steven Cameron, works with the four main contractors and their sub-contractors to deliver this plan. The focus of delivery depends very much on feedback from the site - the programme is employer-led, responding to employer requirements. The ESP has recently been reviewed to respond to feedback and new priority areas have been identified.

The priority areas are:
- training apprentices;
- providing job opportunities;
- encouraging the take up of NVQ qualifications;
- supporting the Construction and Built Environment Diploma;
- providing opportunities for graduates;
- Health and Safety training;
- Leadership and Management training; and
- promoting company training plans.
