1-3 Canal Street
In April 2009 the London Borough of Camden approved detailed plans for 1-3 Canal Street designed by Niall McLaughlin Architects.
Construction work is already underway for this 'mixed-use' building which contains a diverse mix of uses:
- Energy Centre;
- Residential Accommodation;
- Multi-Storey Car Park;
- Multi-use Games Area (MUGA); and
- Café and Bar.
Energy Centre
The Energy Centre plant will house a Combined Heat and Power plant (CHP) which will serve the heating and power demand for a significant portion of the development. The energy centre also houses an electrical primary substation (PSS) which will serve the entire development’s electricity needs.
Residential Accommodation
Three different types of housing form the residential accommodation. Each type occupies different parts of the building and includes:
- 50 open market homes including 1-3 bedroom apartments, townhouse duplexes and penthouse duplexes;
- 20 intermediate residential units; and
- 34 general needs social rented.
Multi-Storey Car Park
The 417 space multi-storey car park is accessed by a ramp at the rear of the building. The car park is designed according to the Park Mark safer parking standards which aim to reduce crime and fear of crime in car parks.
MUGA
A two-storey high opening through the building contains a sports pitch for supervised public access. Visitors will enter through the southern atrium so that access can be passively supervised.
Café and Bar
The atrium faces south and opens out to a terrace with a café and bar promoting active use along the canal towath.
